BE SAFE & STAY PEACEFUL

The ACLU offers guides on protester rights: https://www.aclu.org/know-your-rights/protesters-rights/

Here's another great resource: https://infosecforactivists.org/

Summary from sites above:

  • Stay hydrated and dress for the expected weather.

  • Bring any supplies needed including water, meds, and cash.

  • Take protective goggles or shatter-resistant glasses (for tear gas or irritants), face covering, milk of magnesia, towelettes.

  • Let at least one emergency contact know your plan.

  • Enable and practice using Emergency SOS (iOS) and Lockdown mode (Android).

  • Searching the internet, use DuckDuckGo.

  • Check and update your Android or iOS version to make sure you have the latest security fixes.

  • Turn phone to airplane mode.

  • Disable your GPS receiver by turning off Location Services: Settings → Privacy → Location Services, toggle Location Services off.

  • If confronted or detained - stay calm and respectful, do not resist arrest or escalate the situation, clearly state you wish to remain silent and want a lawyer.

STOP DISINFORMATION AGAINST PROTESTERS:

ree

Search social media for posts about protests in your area. Counter disinformation about BLM and anti-ICE protests. Here’s an example on a post advertising the No Kings Protest in Flint (customize for your state):

Comment: “Are they boarding up windows yet?”

Response: “Please get your facts straight before making these inflammatory comments. You are spreading dangerous lies that could incite violence against innocent Michiganders who are merely exercising their rights. Do you know how many riots we had during BLM in Michigan in 2020? There was one "riot" in Grand Rapids the first day and it was a group of teens who did the rioting AFTER the official protest broke up. Every rioter was caught. The other hundreds of protests were peaceful.”
